I spent a day at the swankiest gym in Pune and this is what I experienced | ft. MultiFit

MultiFit is arguably the swankiest gym in Pune, one of the very few gyms in India which concentrate on functional fitness over bodybuilding. MultiFit is a perfect blend of traditional values with a dash of the new age twist. They are trying to showcase fitness in an entirely different perspective by going beyond machines, weights and dumbbells.

When I was invited to spend a day at their Kalyani Nagar Studio in Pune, I was very excited. The experience was beyond what I had imagined. It was a day of tough yet fun workouts, overdose of fitness information and meeting unassumingly talented, dedicated and fit people.
The moment I entered, I was carried away by the EDM blasting in the background and a luxurious looking fitness studio. I had randomly heard about calisthenics, but didn't have an idea of what exactly it was. My day at MultiFit sure opened my eyes towards this amazing concept of urban calisthenics and functional training, and I shall share everything about what I learnt at MultiFit with you all in this post.

I first had a look at the entire fitness studio. The antidote to boring gyms, MultiFit is a melting pot of fitness insanity with personal trainers and the very best functional equipments. Unlike other gyms, MultiFit does not use exercise equipment and instead uses simple tools like ropes, weights, tires and if you are up for it a couple of rounds in the ring to improve one's performance, making you use your own body weight to aid in working out.
Was so much fun lifting weights with trainer Varsha Meghunde
I spoke to the trainers and the brainchild behind this concept fitness studio and got an insight into what exactly transpires at this elite gym called MultiFit. What surprised me the most was the way trainers involved in the workouts themselves. The energy level at MultiFit is mind-boggling. I observed the evening batch performing their circuit and tried some exercises myself. Most of them were partially failed attempts since I don't workout, even though I read a lot about health and fitness. I've put up videos of people working out at MultiFit on Instagram, go have a look if you haven't already.

The personal training sessions at MultiFit are customized according to the client's body goals and requirements. Special tailor made workouts are crafted for people with injuries. MultiFit has the most experienced trainers handpicked by the owner Samir Kapoor, who is a fitness enthusiast himself.

Exercise is not as important as movement is, and functional training at MultiFit focuses more on movement than anything else. Being the only gym in Pune offering these services such as MMA, calisthenics, boxing and Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s fighting style) all under the same roof along with functional training, MultiFit is a haven for the fitness conscious. There are several workouts routines and programs offered at MultiFit. I shall list some of them along with details below.

#1 iFIT

iFIT or Intense Functional Interval Training is based on the immensely popular HIIT Training program. HIIT is a training technique in which you give your 100% effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and helps you burn more fat in less time. There are four batches daily (8 a.m., 9 a.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.) conducted by Annavi Khot. Annavi Khot has qualified in THE ACSM course which gives her the right knowledge as a personal trainer

#2  Multi Spin

One of the great things about the Multi Spin Program at MultiFit is that it is adaptable to your fitness level. Their top-notch fitness experts invigorating music and visualization come together to make your MultiSpin classes both fun and effective. If you've ever left a group exercise class feeling frustrated, you'll appreciate that there are no complicated moves to learn with the Multi Spin Program. Regardless of how fit, flexible or coordinated you are, you'll get a great workout. Simply hop on your bike, set the resistance to the level that's right for you and let your instructor guide you through an incredible ride. Studio Cycling is an excellent workout to strengthen your heart and tone your legs. Classes consist of participants perched atop special stationary bikes. The instructor then takes the class on a virtual "ride" that includes sprints, hill climbs, and other fun exercises like intervals and circuits. Classes are usually 45 to 50 minutes long and are set to music.

#3 12WTC

Whether you're out of shape, need to regain weight or you've never stepped into a gym before, this is your definitive guide to a better body. Working out improves muscle tone and controls weight, which can lead to a more positive body image. 12WTC is all about setting you up for success - for life. If you’re after a quick-fix solution or looking for crash diet, MultiFit isn't a place for you. Their goal at MultiFit is to educate and guide you to make better decisions with the long-term goal being optimal health. The first and most important step of the 12WTC is to make up your mind to work hard both physically and mentally over 12 weeks to achieve an end goal that really means something to you. Before the real personal training sessions begin, they decide what your main goals are and how they are going to help you achieve them.

#6 JKD

JKD is the American Chinese Kungfu martial art founded by the legendary actor and martial artist, Bruce Lee. Jeet Kune Do was founded because the legendary Lee found traditional martial art techniques too rigid and formal to be practical in street fighting. He decided to design a system with an emphasis on 'Practicality, Simplicity and Efficiency'. He investigated the traditional martial arts extensively and came up with Jeet Kune Do which he called 'the style of no styles'. This fighting style can be practiced by people of all ages and levels of physical fitness, since the fighting style is very subtle and requires the fighter to do feints that put the opponent off-guard and to conserve energy whilst fighting. JKD sessions are conducted by Dhruv Chauhdhuri.

Who is Samir Kapoor and why did he launch MultiFit? Hailing from an army background, Samir has always enjoyed adventure sports. He has trekked to the Everest base camp 4 times and is an advance level diver. This passion towards the adrenaline pump veered him to start a new health revolution, MultiFit. Samir noticed that most of patrons in gyms aim for physical fitness rather than building a muscular body. However, they failed to realize that machines were not necessary to achieve the required results. Through MultiFit, Samir wishes to change this perception and reintroduce exercising as was practiced by our ancestors. He is an advocate of functional training, which focuses on fitness that improves one's performance at everyday activities. He also developed an interest in calisthenics, the practice of exercising using one's own body weight and this was the stepping stone in his life called MultiFit. After graduating as an engineer, Samir secured a masters degree in Personnel Management and a Ph.D. in Human Resources. He decided to combine his interest in fitness and his knowledge and experience in human resource management as the Chairman and MD of MultiFit. With the aim of spreading functional training as a fitness regime across India, Samir aims to create a community of dedicated fitness trainers, and most importantly, a healthy society.

Dhruv Choudhuri always has had an immense passion for fitness and exercise. He invested himself in fitness and exercise from a young age, and happens to be one of the very few to receive training from Bruce Lee's lineage in the martial art form of Jeet Kune Do (JKD). On top of this, he is one of the few people in India, who can do a 2-finger push up. He is now a certified JKD expert and teaches martial arts at MultiFit. While not many in the country adopt it as a fitness regime, Dhruv is an expert in calisthenics and designs his fitness circuits around it. His ability to draw the best results from patrons is admired by his seniors, teammates and trainees alike. He is also one of the few vegan athletes in India.
