This iconic pizzeria is situated along the main road from Pondicherry to Auroviile. We had already decided we wanted to try these pizzas since it was considered one of the best in town. So during our road trip to Pondicherry, when we stopped by for shopping, we asked people around to recommended places for lunch. And all had just one thing to say – ‘Tanto’. So we knew it was something we shouldn’t miss.
Tanto is a breezy open air restaurant which serves only Italian food. There is ample parking space and great furniture and decor. It is It is run by an Italian family and serves authentic wood fired oven pizzas. They have a plethora of veg and non veg (chicken, beef, seafood) pastas, salads, risottos and pizzas. They do not serve alcoholic beverages, but a few soft drinks, teas and desserts were also on the menu.
It was fully occupied even in the afternoon. The guests mainly included foreign tourists and a few Indian tourists – mainly students who were riding towards or from Auroville. The service is slow owing to the number of guests, but we weren’t in a hurry either, so didn’t make a difference. We just got a few extra moments to enjoy the vibe.
You get a typical laidback feel here. You are engulfed in the aura of hippie culture which is so prominent in Auroville. Totally chilled out place meant for a free soul. If given a chance, I’d go here as often as possible. The ambiance is that great.
We ordered the Tanto special pizza in large. The quantity was larger than expected and it was delicious. Thin crusted with generous amount of cheese, tomato, onion and fish. This place is total value for money considering the quality and quantity of food they serve.
